Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak at a Memphis 24-Hour Fitness
The Health Department confirmed an outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease at the 24-Hour Fitness club located on Ridgeway Road in East Memphis. Legionnaires' disease, which is also called legionellosis, is a bacterial disease that breeds in aquatic settings, such as spas, hot-tubs, and pools. Legionnaires disease usually develops in large buildings such as hotels, cruise ships, hospitals, and fitness centers because they have complex water systems. Legionnaires' disease can develop into a severe form of pneumonia. If not promptly treated, victims can suffer from respiratory failure, septic shock, kidney failure and death. 24-Hour Fitness has closed down the "wet areas," which include the steam room and pool.
