What is a spinal cord injury?

The Christopher & Dana Reeves Foundation describes spinal cord injury as damage to the nerves within the bony protection of the spinal canal. The Reeves foundation says that the spinal cord does not have to be severed for a loss of function to occur, and in most spinal cord injuries, the spinal cord is bruised but intact.

The spinal cord works with the brain to coordinate movement and sensation in the body, so when the spinal cord is damaged, it interrupts the spinal cord's ability to communicate with the brain to control autonomic function.

Levels and types of spinal cord injury

According to the Mayo Clinic, the ability to control the limbs after a spinal cord injury depends on both the location of the injury along the spinal cord and the severity of the injury. The lowest, uninjured part of the spinal cord is the neurological level of injury and is referred to by its level of "completeness" which is either complete or incomplete.

With a complete spinal cord injury, all feeling and ability to control movement below the level of injury is lost. With an incomplete spinal cord injury, there will be varying degrees of feeling and movement below the point of injury.
